Elkhorn High senior can become the second wrestler in program history to win multiple state titles
Above- Nebraska's offensive Line provides time for QB Casey Thompson to throw to a 14-yard TD strike to WR Marcus Washington. The transfer from the Texas Longhorns had three receptions for 52 yards and Nebraska's final touchdown early in the third quarter to give the Huskers a 24-0 lead over the Hawkeyes. The pass was Washington's first ever TD reception as a Nebraska Cornhusker and prove to be the game winner.
The Huskers opened the second half with the ball but the drive stalled at Nebraska's 43. Brian Buschini booted a high, 37-yard punt that was muffed by Arland Bruce IV. The fumble was recovered by Alante Brown, setting up the Huskers with another short field, this time at the Iowa 18. Three plays later, Thompson found Washington streaking across the middle into the end zone to give Nebraska a 24-0 lead less than three minutes into the third quarter.
Marcus Washington has played in every game with nine starts in his first season at Nebraska in 2022. He has caught 28 passes for 419 yards, setting career highs and ranking second on the team in both categories. Washington caught two passes for 27 yards against Northwestern, with both catches resulting in first downs. Against North Dakota, he made two receptions for 31 yards. Washington had six catches for a career-h igh 123 yards against Georgia Southern, posting his second career 100-yard receiving effort and his first as a Husker. Washington had two catches for 17 yards the next week against No. 6 Oklahoma. Washington had two catches for 15 yards against Indiana. He hauled in four passes for 53 yards in the win at Rutgers. Washington hauled in three passes for 30 yards at Purdue. He had an eight-yard catch the next game against No. 17 Illinois. Washington caught two passes and led Nebraska with 63 receiving yards against Minnesota. He again led Nebraska with 36 receiving yards on two catches at No. 3 Michigan. Washington made two catches for 16 yards against Wisconsin.
Washington joined Nebraska after playing three seasons at Texas. He appeared in 31 games with eight starts as a Longhorn, catching 25 passes for 366 yards and three touchdowns. In his final season at Texas in 2021, Washington set career highs with 18 receptions, 277 receiving yards and two touchdowns while playing in all 12 games with seven starts. He had his first career 100-yard receiving game against Kansas, when he also set a career high with two touchdown catches. At Baylor, Washington recorded a career-high seven receptions. Washington played in seven games and caught four passes for 56 yards and one touchdown during the 2020 season. As a true freshman in 2019, Washington played in 11 games with one start and finished with three catches for 33 yards. He arrived at Texas as one of the nation's top recruits. A 2019 Under Armour All-American, Washington was ranked among the nation's top 150 players as a two-way standout for Trinity Catholic High School. As a receiver, Washington caught 132 passes for 2,527 yards and 39 touchdowns in his career. Defensively, he totaled 11 career interceptions - five of which he returned for touchdowns - and added 111 tackles and 13 pass breakups. Washington helped Trinity Catholic to its first state championship in 2018 by hauling in three receptions for 104 yards and three touchdowns in the state championship game.
Marcus was born on Aug. 7, 2000 and he is the son of Anissa and Carl Washington. He is majoring in human development.
